⚠️ Warning for Irish Households Using “Dodgy Boxes”
Irish authorities are issuing a stark warning to households using illegal streaming devices — known as “dodgy boxes” — to access premium TV channels without paying. Recent figures suggest around 400,000 homes in Ireland may still be using these boxes, but new enforcement efforts mean that users could soon be personally fined up to €5,000 or even face prosecution.
For years, investigations focused mainly on suppliers and distributors of illegal IPTV services. However, a major crackdown is now extending to end users, with Gardaí and anti-piracy agencies targeting those who knowingly stream pirated content.
In recent months, Gardaí have conducted multiple nationwide raids in cooperation with the Federation Against Copyright Theft (FACT) and broadcasting partners such as Sky and Virgin Media. During one high-profile operation, officers seized hundreds of illegal streaming devices, cash, and records of paying customers. Officials warned that this evidence could be used to issue direct fines and court summons to users.
Authorities are keen to stress that using dodgy boxes is a clear breach of the Copyright and Related Rights Act 2000, which makes it illegal to access or distribute copyrighted content without a valid licence. Beyond legal penalties, consumers are also being reminded of the security risks — including malware infections, phishing scams, and exposure of personal data.
What might seem like a clever way to save €30–€50 a month could ultimately cost far more in fines and legal fees. Enforcement agencies have made their position clear: the days of turning a blind eye are over. Irish viewers are being urged to disconnect illegal devices immediately — before the next Garda raid comes to their door.
