Gandia Fallas 2024 – La Cabalgata del Ninot de las Fallas
Every spring the city of Gandia in the Valencian Community comes alive with one of Spain’s most vibrant and culturally rich annual festivals: Las Fallas. Celebrated each March in honour of San José (Saint Joseph), this centuries-old tradition blends artistic expression, community pride and festive pageantry. One of the highlights of Fallas in Gandia is the Cabalgata del Ninot, a parade that brings the streets to life with music, costumes and creative performances.
Las Fallas themselves trace their origins back to simple bonfires and carpenters’ customs, evolving over time into an elaborate festival of enormous sculptural figures called fallas and their smaller companions, ninots (figures). In Gandia, the celebration has grown into a major cultural event that was recently recognised as a Fiesta of National Tourist Interest, reflecting its importance to local heritage and tourism.
The Cabalgata del Ninot traditionally takes place in the days leading up to the main Fallas festivities. Local fallas commissions — neighbourhood groups responsible for building the artistic monuments — prepare elaborate costumes, choreographed presentations and creative themes that they showcase during the parade. Rather than focusing solely on static sculptures, the Cabalgata emphasises movement, performance and public engagement. Bands march alongside participants, dancers and performers animate the route, and audiences lining the streets are treated to a dynamic tableau of colour and music.
While each fallas commission brings its own unique style and interpretation, there are common threads in the Cabalgata: a blend of traditional Valencian dress and contemporary creativity, humour and satire, and a joyful spirit that reflects the inclusive nature of the festival. Families often participate together, from young children in costume to adults performing routines, reinforcing the strong sense of community that defines Las Fallas.
The parade serves as both an artistic showcase and a social celebration, inviting locals and visitors alike to experience the vibrancy of Gandia’s cultural identity. It’s a vivid reminder that Las Fallas are not just about monumental sculptures and fireworks, but also about participation, camaraderie and shared cultural pride.
