Corrie and Emmerdale changes for ITV in 2026
In January 2026, ITV will implement significant scheduling changes for its flagship soaps, Emmerdale and Coronation Street. The new format introduces a “soaps power hour” on weekdays, featuring 30-minute episodes of Emmerdale at 8:00 PM, followed by 30-minute episodes of Coronation Street at 8:30 PM.
This adjustment reduces the total weekly airtime for both soaps, with each now airing five episodes per week, eliminating the current hour-long episodes. Episodes will continue to be available on the streaming platform ITVX at 7:00 AM on the day of broadcast, allowing viewers the flexibility to watch at their convenience.
ITV’s Managing Director of Media and Entertainment, Kevin Lygo, stated that the change is “viewer-led” and aims to make the soaps more “streaming-friendly.”
The network plans to mark the transition with special episodes featuring unprecedented stunts, aiming to captivate audiences and rejuvenate interest in these long-standing series.
However, this restructuring comes with significant implications for production. ITV has announced the reduction of 75 jobs across both soaps, primarily affecting production staff. The decision is part of a broader strategy to manage budget constraints and ensure the longevity of these programs.
Industry observers note that this move reflects broader trends in television consumption, where traditional viewing figures have declined due to the rise of streaming services and changing audience habits. By adapting their scheduling and distribution methods, ITV aims to align with contemporary viewing preferences and maintain the relevance of Emmerdale and Coronation Street in a competitive media landscape.
