Sky Sports and ITV win England UEFA Nations League rights
Sky Sports has secured the exclusive live broadcasting rights for all competitive England fixtures in the brand-new UEFA Nations League, marking a significant expansion of their international football coverage. At the same time, ITV will continue to provide free-to-air access to England fans by showing exclusive live coverage of all England’s qualifying matches for major tournaments up to 2022, under a new agreement announced today.
As part of this updated deal, Sky Sports customers will gain access to a wider range of international football than ever before. Viewers will be able to watch the UEFA Nations League live for the first time, with full exclusive coverage of England’s matches. Sky will also show all Home Nations qualifiers for both Euro 2020 and the 2022 World Cup live, as well as delivering comprehensive highlights of England’s games. In total, the broadcaster will air up to 900 live international fixtures, offering fans an unprecedented level of choice and depth.
ITV, meanwhile, strengthens its commitment to providing free-to-air football by retaining the rights to show live coverage and highlights of every England qualifier for UEFA Euro 2020 and the 2022 FIFA World Cup. In addition, ITV will exclusively broadcast England’s warm-up matches ahead of each tournament, should qualification be secured, ensuring fans can follow the national team’s progress from preparation to competitive action.
Sky Sports also holds exclusive rights to all Home Nations matches during the inaugural UEFA Nations League. This new competition will be divided into four leagues according to UEFA rankings, creating more competitive and meaningful fixtures by matching teams of similar strength. Games will take place across September, October, and November 2018. The winners of each group will move on to the final-four stage in June 2019, featuring semi-finals and a final to crown the very first UEFA Nations League champion. Importantly, results from the competition will help determine seedings for the UEFA Euro 2020 and FIFA World Cup 2022 qualification campaigns, adding further importance to every match played.
