UK TV coverage rights for the Women’s Super League have been announced this week.
Sky will broadcast show up to 44 matches from the Women’s Super League for the 2024/25 season
The BBC will have free to air coverage of 22 games in total during 2024/25, for which a minimum of 18 games will be shown on either BBC One or BBC Two, with the remainder available on the BBC iPlayer.
Sky Sports Managing Director, Jonathan Licht :
“It’s a hugely exciting time for women’s football in this country. Extending our partnership with the Women’s Super League with more matches than any other broadcaster is fantastic news for Sky Sports customers. Audiences have increased hugely over recent years and we’re proud of our contribution to the growth of the game and women’s sport more broadly, showing 70% of all live action last year on our channels.”
Philip Bernie, of BBC Sport, said:
“Women’s football has reached unprecedented heights, with the Lionesses’ huge international successes at the Women’s Euros and World Cup, and a terrific contest for this season’s WSL title. We are pleased that BBC Sport will continue to showcase the great excitement of our domestic league by extending our partnerships with the Women’s Super League.”
About the The Women’s Super League (WSL)
The Women’s Super League (WSL) is England’s top-flight professional women’s football league, featuring clubs like Chelsea, Arsenal, Manchester City and more, and has become one of the most competitive domestic leagues in women’s football. The league has seen rapid growth in recent years in terms of quality on the pitch, fan engagement and media coverage, driven in part by the success of the England national team and increased investment in the women’s game.
One of the most significant markers of that growth has been the expansion and evolution of broadcast coverage. For the 2024/25 season, the WSL’s domestic TV rights continue to be held jointly by Sky Sports and the BBC. Sky Sports has secured the rights to show up to 44 live matches on its network — more than any other broadcaster in the UK for this campaign — providing comprehensive coverage for subscribers across multiple Sky channels and the NOW streaming service. Meanwhile, the BBC offers free-to-air access to a slate of up to 22 games, with at least 18 of those shown on BBC One or BBC Two and the remaining available on BBC iPlayer, ensuring that a mix of viewers with pay TV and those using free services can follow the action.
This rights arrangement continues a partnership that began in 2021, reflecting both broadcasters’ belief in the commercial potential and sporting appeal of the WSL. Viewership numbers have risen substantially since Sky and the BBC first began regular league coverage, while digital engagement and social media traction have also grown rapidly, underlining the broadening audience for women’s football.
The WSL itself is evolving on and off the pitch, including plans for expansion to more teams in future seasons and ongoing discussions about competitive structures that will sustain growth. All of these elements — improved broadcast deals, greater visibility on both subscription and free platforms, and rising standards of play — contribute to strengthening the league’s profile domestically and in the wider European context.
