Home Made Rafts in Pego – The Baixà del Riu Bullent
The Baixà del Riu Bullent (Descent of the Bullent River) is an annual festival in Pego, a town in Spain’s Marina Alta region. Held on the Saturday before Carnival, this lively event features a race along the Bullent River, located within the Marjal Pego-Oliva Natural Park.
Participants construct their own eco-friendly rafts, dress in creative costumes, and embrace a fun, lighthearted atmosphere.
The tradition began in 1986 when a group of friends launched the event to raise awareness about river conservation and environmental protection. Over the years, it has grown in popularity, attracting participants and spectators from Pego and nearby towns. Today, it is recognized as the unofficial kickoff to Carnival in Pego.
For nearly four decades, the Baixà has upheld its spirit of festivity and environmental consciousness, inspiring creative raft designs and active participation in ecological advocacy. It has also drawn attention to the Marjal Pego-Oliva Natural Park, promoting sustainable tourism and celebrating the region’s natural beauty.
