How to Fix Channel 4 HD No Signal on Manhattan SX
Many owners of Manhattan SX Freesat HD receivers may suddenly discover that Channel 4 HD on channel 104 now displays a “No Signal” message despite most other channels continuing to work normally.
For many viewers, especially those watching UK TV in Spain, this issue can appear very confusing because the satellite dish may still receive BBC, ITV and other HD channels perfectly well.
However, the real cause of the problem is not usually a fault with the receiver itself.
Instead, the issue has been caused by major changes to how Channel 4 HD is broadcast on the Astra satellites at 28.2° East.
What Changed With Channel 4 HD?
Previously, Channel 4 HD was broadcast as a single national version using a relatively easy-to-receive satellite signal across much of Europe.
This meant many viewers in Spain could receive Channel 4 HD quite reliably, even with smaller satellite dishes.
However, Channel 4 has changed its HD service to use multiple regional variations instead of one national feed.
The single Channel 4 HD stream was effectively replaced by six separate regional HD versions.
Unfortunately for viewers outside the UK, five of these six regional versions use much weaker UK spot beam signals designed mainly for reception within Britain and Ireland.
These spot beam signals become significantly harder to receive in Spain, particularly in southern areas such as the Costa Blanca and Valencia regions.
As a result, many Freesat receivers now automatically select one of the weaker regional Channel 4 HD variants, even though the viewer’s satellite dish may not be large enough to receive it reliably.
Why Manhattan SX Boxes Show “No Signal”
On Manhattan SX Freesat receivers, channel 104 is automatically assigned using Freesat regional settings linked to the postcode entered during setup.
Following the Channel 4 HD regionalisation changes, many Manhattan SX boxes began assigning one of the newer regional HD streams to channel 104.
The problem is that if the selected regional version comes from one of the weaker UK spot beam transponders, viewers in Spain may experience:
- “No Signal” messages
- Black screens
- Channel unavailable warnings
- Intermittent reception
- Pixelation during hot weather
Meanwhile, standard definition Channel 4 may continue working perfectly because SD services often remain on easier-to-receive satellite beams.
Dish Size Matters in Spain
This issue particularly affects viewers using smaller dishes in Spain.
Many installations that previously worked perfectly for older UK satellite signals may now struggle with the newer tighter UK spot beam coverage.
Depending on location, reliable reception of the weaker Channel 4 HD regional signals may require:
- Larger satellite dishes
- More accurate dish alignment
- Higher quality LNBs
- Better cabling
In northern Spain, some viewers may still receive the weaker signals using relatively modest dish sizes.
Further south, however, much larger dishes are often needed to maintain stable reception of the newer UK spot beam services.
Possible Solutions
Some Manhattan SX users may be able to restore Channel 4 HD by changing Freesat regional settings or using a different postcode during setup.
