The Solemn Procession of the Holy Burial (La Procesión del Santo Entierro) is one of the most moving and poignant celebrations of Holy Week in Gandia, Spain. It takes place every Good Friday evening and resurrects centuries of tradition, expertly combining deep spiritual devotion with music, art, and community.

Directed by the city’s Confraternities and Brotherhoods, the procession features majestic pasos—the large, elaborately decorated floats that show significant scenes of Christ’s Passion and burial. The floats are often carried along the streets by costaleros (bearers) with hooded penitents, slow, deliberate drumming, and somber music that evoke a moving atmosphere during the night.

As the procession winds its way through Gandia’s old town, thousands of quiet spectators stand and gaze, pausing. The whole atmosphere is one of respect and thoughtfulness—about pain, sacrifice, and hope with Easter. It’s not a spectacle; it’s a moment of contact with something more, shared by the entire city.

This major Good Friday event is recognized as a Festival of National Tourist Interest since 2019, and included all the brotherhoods of Gandia, except for the Brotherhood of the Risen Christ.​​

La Solemne Procesión del Santo Entierro es una de las celebraciones más emotivas y conmovedoras de la Semana Santa en Gandía, España. Mientras la procesión serpentea por el casco antiguo de Gandía, miles de espectadores silenciosos observan de pie, haciendo una pausa. El ambiente es de respeto y reflexión, sobre el dolor, el sacrificio y la esperanza de la Pascua. No es un espectáculo; Es un momento de contacto con algo más, compartido por toda la ciudad.
