Channel 4 streaming app returns to Freesat
After a five-year absence from the Freesat platform, the Channel 4 streaming app has officially returned to the free-to-air satellite television service.
The relaunch took place on 29th September 2023 and brings thousands of hours of additional on-demand content to Freesat users with compatible 4K receivers.
The return of the Channel 4 streaming platform — formerly known as All 4 and now simply branded as Channel 4 — marks a significant development for Freesat viewers who have long been missing access to Channel 4 catch-up services directly through their satellite boxes.
Why Did Channel 4 Leave Freesat?
Channel 4 originally removed its on-demand app from Freesat back in 2018 following a dispute over carriage and platform fees between Channel 4 and Freesat.
The removal meant Freesat users lost direct access to:
- Channel 4 catch-up content
- Box sets
- On-demand programming
- Live streaming through the app
At the time, the decision frustrated many Freesat viewers, especially as competing platforms such as Freeview Play and Sky continued offering Channel 4 on-demand access.
However, the relationship between Channel 4 and Freesat later improved significantly after Channel 4 became a shareholder in Everyone TV, the organisation that now operates the Freesat platform.
This led to growing speculation that the Channel 4 streaming service would eventually return.
The first major sign of improving relations came when Channel 4 HD returned to Freesat satellite receivers. The relaunch of the Channel 4 streaming app now completes that wider return to the platform.
What Content is Available?
The return of the Channel 4 app adds approximately 16,000 hours of on-demand content to Freesat’s 4K TV boxes.
Content available through the app includes:
- Catch-up television
- Full box sets
- Channel 4 Originals
- Films
- Documentaries
- Comedy series
- Reality TV
- Live Channel 4 streaming
Popular Channel 4 programmes include:
- Gogglebox
- Taskmaster
- Grand Designs
- The Inbetweeners
- First Dates
- 24 Hours in Police Custody
The app joins other major UK streaming services already available on Freesat 4K boxes, including:
This further strengthens Freesat’s push toward combining traditional satellite television with internet streaming services.
Only Available on Freesat 4K Boxes
One important limitation is that the Channel 4 streaming app is only available on Freesat’s newer “4K” receivers.
Supported boxes include:
- Freesat 4K TV Box
- Freesat Recordable 4K TV Box
Older Freesat receivers, including many Humax models and first-generation Freesat HD boxes, do not support the Channel 4 app.
This mirrors the situation with ITVX, which is also only available on the newer Freesat 4K platform.
The reason is largely due to hardware limitations and the more advanced internet streaming systems required by modern apps.
Freesat’s Hybrid TV Strategy
The return of the Channel 4 app highlights Freesat’s ongoing strategy of combining:
- Satellite television
- Streaming apps
- Catch-up TV
- Internet services
Modern Freesat receivers increasingly function more like hybrid streaming platforms than traditional satellite boxes.
Users can now combine:
- Live satellite TV
- On-demand viewing
- Streaming apps
- Internet-delivered content
through a single interface.
Emily Doyle, Content Partnership Manager at Freesat, described the relaunch as an important milestone in expanding content access for Freesat viewers.
Using the Channel 4 App in Spain
For viewers in Spain, accessing the Channel 4 streaming app requires additional setup.
Like:
- BBC iPlayer
- ITVX
- UKTV Play
the Channel 4 app is officially intended only for viewers located within the UK.
The platform checks the user’s internet IP address to determine location. Spanish internet connections will normally be blocked from accessing UK-only streaming services.
To access Channel 4 streaming services in Spain, users typically require either:
- A VPN service
- A Smart DNS service
These services work by routing internet traffic through UK-based servers, making the streaming platform believe the viewer is located in the United Kingdom.
Without a VPN or Smart DNS service, the app will usually display regional restriction or location error messages.

Our recommended Smart DNS Services
For many British expats and holiday homeowners, VPNs and Smart DNS services in Spain have become essential tools for accessing UK television and online services that are normally blocked outside the UK. Services such as BBC iPlayer, ITVX, Channel 4, Sky Go and Freely often check your internet location using your Spanish IP address and restrict access accordingly. A VPN routes your internet connection securely through a UK server, helping protect privacy while also unlocking geo-restricted content, whereas a Smart DNS service simply redirects location checks for faster streaming speeds on devices like Smart TVs, Firesticks, Sky boxes and Freesat receivers. Smart DNS is often easier for streaming devices that do not support VPN apps directly, while VPNs offer greater security and encryption for general internet use.

Internet Speed and Streaming Quality
Because the Channel 4 app relies entirely on internet streaming, connection quality is important.
For reliable streaming, especially HD content, users should ideally have:
- Stable broadband
- Fibre internet
- Reliable WiFi coverage
In rural parts of Spain, some viewers increasingly use:
- Starlink internet
- Fibre broadband
- 4G/5G internet services
to improve streaming reliability for UK television apps.
Final Thoughts
The return of the Channel 4 streaming app to Freesat is a significant upgrade for users of the newer Freesat 4K platform.
After five years away, Freesat viewers once again have access to Channel 4 catch-up services, box sets and live streaming directly through their satellite receiver.
However, the relaunch also highlights the growing divide between older satellite receivers and newer hybrid TV platforms that combine traditional broadcasting with internet streaming services.
For viewers in Spain, access remains possible, but additional VPN or Smart DNS services will still be required due to UK streaming geo-restrictions.
