Test transmissions have started on satellite as Sky prepare to launch their new Ultra High Definition (UHD) TV service.

The Sky UHD service is expected to launch in a few months time.

Earlier this week, Sky’s Director of Strategy, Nick Herm, said that UHD would arrive on the platform by summer.

Sky’s UHD service will be available to subscribers that have taken up newly launched SkyQ service.

However, no details of the scope and pricing of Sky UHD have been announced.

Sky to ‘set your TV free’ with SkyQ

Sky will launch a new device on November 18th, it has confirmed, though very little detail on the new device has been released.

Instead, it’s put out a teaser trailer to build hype, with the promise that the mystery device will “set your TV free”. The forthcoming device called SkyQ, is said to be Sky’s 4K set-top box.
Over the summer, BT introduced its own 4K sports channel, so Sky won’t want to be seen to be lagging behind.

Sky is putting the finishing touches to an advanced set-top box, dubbed SkyQ, that it hopes will be a powerful weapon in its defence of its domestic pay-TV business against BT and help it integrate its European operations.

The new hardware is due to be unveiled within weeks and will offer satellite households an “Apple and Netflix-style” experience, according to industry insiders.
