The BBC has announced it plans to launch five new high definition channels by early 2014.

These new BBC HD channels will be : BBC News HD, BBC Three HD, BBC Four HD, CBeebies HD and CBBC HD.

These new BBC HD channels will be via Freeview (in the UK only) as well as satellite services such as Freesat HD and SkyHD.

“BBC One HD and BBC Two HD have already proved to be highly valued by our audiences and I’m delighted that we’re able to follow this with the launch of five new subscription-free BBC HD channels by early 2014,” said the BBC’s director general Tony Hall.

At present there are only four HD channels offered subscription free and free to air from the main broadcasters.

They are BBC One HD, BBC Two HD, ITV HD and Channel 4 HD.

There are also regional variants of the BBC One HD service for Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.

The BBC has indicated it also wants to launch English regional variants of its existing BBC One HD service as well as Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland editions of BBC Two HD. This would not need any of the new capacity. It would, however, need to be approved by the BBC Trust.

Listed below are the channel numbers in the Sky satellite EPG (electronic programme guide) for all available BBC TV channels and radio stations.

On the 26 March 2013 we’ll be changing our EPG positions on Sky at the same time as launching BBC Two HD. The table below reflects the new channel numbers. ( )

BBC One HD will be 141 (was 143)
BBC Two HD will be 142 (BBC HD was 169)
BBC ALBA will be 143 (was 168)

If you have a Sky set-top box but don’t have an active viewing card, you will receive BBC One London on channel 101 and BBC Two England on 102. This is because the receiver has no way of establishing where in the UK it is located and automatically defaults to these two channels.

During the early hours of 27 September 2012, the BBC will be making some changes to its BBC HD frequencies and transponder.

These changes include chaning from QPSK to 8PSK, and changing the FEC from 8/9 FEC to 2/3.

This will allow more HD capacity and channels on the BBC HD transponder. And this extra HD capacity will be used for the forthcoming launch of BBC One HD for Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.
