Televisión Digital Terrestre (Terrestrial Digital Television) also know as TDT, is Spain’s version of the UK’s Freeview system.
Digital TV in Spain provides digital television channels via your normal terrestrial TV aerial on the roof.
To receive Digital TV in Spain you will require :
- a TV aerial
- possibly a aerial signal amplifier
- a digital tuner – either by a separate digital terrestrial set top box, or a TV with a built in digital tuner.

Spanish TV Installations – TV Aerials
To receive Spanish TV signals, you will need an aerial antenna – your existing aerial MAY be suitable for reception of digital TV signals, but the polarisation of the aerial may need to be changed. If you scan for digital TV channels and you only receive about 8 Spanish digital channels then this can mean your TV aerial is on the incorrect polarisation for digital TV.

Spanish TV Installations – set top boxes
To receive Spanish TV signals, you will need a digital tuner – either by a separate digital terrestrial set top box, or a TV with a built in digital tuner.
Spanish TV Installations – Amplifers
To receive Spanish TV signals, you may need a mast head amplifier and power supply – required in most locations to help boost the signals reception, or where the TV cable inside the house has to feed multiple TV points.
A Masthead TV aerial amplifier should be fitted at the aerial and will provide the greatest improvement and benefit for boosting Spanish TDT reception, as it will amplify the UHF digital TV signal before any signal loss down the coaxial cable. The effectiveness of a TV aerial amplifiers is governed to a large extent by where they are installed and how well they are designed. A professional TV amplifier with a very low noise figure and moderate signal gain good strong signal handling will always significantly outperform a cheap booster. The amplifier should always be installed close to the aerial.
The least effective type of digital TV signal booster is the cheap set back type which is fitted close to your television. All these set-back TV signal boosters really achieve is to amplify the noise and generally make TDT reception worse!
Spanish TV Installations – Community Installations
A unit like this multichannel programmable TV amplifier is ideal for the distribution of TDT and analogue TV signals around community of apartment clock. This kit may be expensive, but it does have the ability that you can programme in new channel frequencies if and when they become available for TDT.
The older “module” systems are not as flexible, and are more designed to handle analogue rather than digital signals. The multichannel programmable units are also good for when new frequencies come online, as you will not have to buy more separate modules, just programme the new TDT TV frequencies into the unit.
